Not one of us gets out of here alive. We wonder, speculate and look
for clues as to what happens when our days on earth end. We know
for certain that our bodies stay here. We also instinctively sense that
there is much more to who we are. We call that our soul. Since most
of us believe that the soul continues uninterrupted, it's a good guess
that God treasures our souls with a love of which we can't conceive.
Today's opening quotes are from the visions of a German mystic.
I'm guessing that the conversation she hears between the soul and
God, glorious as it is, most likely pales in comparison to the real
exchange we'll have when it's our turn to leave the body behind.

HOW THE SOUL RECEIVES GOD AND GIVES PRAISE
O joyful sight! O friendly greeting! O fond embrace!
Lord, the wonder of you has wounded me, your grace
has overpowered me. O you high cliff, you are so hidden
that none can nest in you save doves and nightingales.
HOW GOD RECEIVES THE SOUL
Welcome, dear dove, you have flown so much in the earthly
kingdom that your wings have grown strong enough for
the heavenly kingdom.
AN ANTIPHONY OF GOD TO THE SOUL IN FIVE THINGS
When I shine, you must gleam. When I flow, you must
ripple. When you sigh, you draw my divine heart into you.
When you weep after me, I take you into my arms. But
when you love, we become one. And when we two are
thus one, there can be no parting, only a blissful
waiting dwells between we two.
Mechtild von Magdeburg (1217-1277)
A Beguine (member of a Roman Catholic lay religious community)
Author of "The Flowing Light of the Godhead"
Excerpted from "Ecstatic Confessions" by Martin Buber
You don't have a soul.
You are a Soul.
You have a body.
C. S. Lewis (1898-1963)
British scholar and novelist
You have come from God, you are a spark of
His Glory; you are a wave of the Ocean
of Bliss; you will get peace only
when you again merge in Him.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba (1926 - )
Indian spiritual teacher
This is the ultimate end of man, to find the One
which is in him; which is his truth, which is his
soul; the key with which he opens the gate
of the spiritual life, the heavenly kingdom.
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)
Bengali poet, playwright, essayist
Nobel Prize for Literature, 1913
The Last Word:
Heaven-born, the soul a heavenward course must hold;
beyond the world she soars; the wise man, I affirm, can
find no rest in that which perishes, nor will he lend
his heart to aught that doth time depend.
Michelangelo di Buonarroti (1475-1564)
Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet
Not-So-Utterly Random Bonus Quote:
I die adoring God,
loving my friends,
not hating my enemies,
and detesting superstition.
François Marie Arouet (1694-1778)
French Enlightenment writer and philosopher
