The word of the Lord came expressly unto Ezekiel
the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans
by the river Chebar; and the hand of the Lord was
there upon him.

And I looked, and behold, a whirlwind came out of the
north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a
brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof
was the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.

Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four
living creatures. And this was their appearance;
they had the likeness of a man.

And every one had four faces, and every one
had four wings. And their feet were straight
feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole
of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour
of burnished brass. And they had the hands of
a man under their wings on their four sides;
and they four had their faces and their wings.
Their wings were joined one to another; they
turned not when they went; they went
every one straight forward.

Ezekiel 1: 1-9

Good news from heaven the angels bring,
Glad tidings to the earth they sing:
To us this day a child is given,
To crown us with the joy of heaven.

Martin Luther (1483-1546)
German priest whose questioning
led to the Protestant Reformation

"Elijah Receiving Bread and Water from an Angel"
Peter Paul Rubens

According to Jewish legend, as an example to
Mankind to take advice from others, however
exalted a person might be, God consulted the
angels about the creation of Mankind. The Angel
of Love supported the idea, because Mankind
would be affectionate and loving. The Angel of
Truth was against, because Man would be full
of lies. For this, God cast him down to earth.
When the other angels objected to this, God
said, "Truth will spring back out of the earth."
The Angel of Justice favoured the creation of
Mankind, so that justice could practiced on
earth, but the Angel of Peace objected on the
grounds that Man would be quarrelsome.

____________

God's universal providence works
through secondary casues...The world
of pure spirits stretches between the Divine
Nature and the world of human beings; because
Divine Wisdom has ordained that the higher should
look after the lower; angels execute the divine plan
for human salvation: they are our guardians,
who free us when hindered and bring us home.

Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)
One of the 33 Doctors of the Church,
a philosopher and theologian

____________

...when angels are talking with someone,
they turn toward him and bond themselves
to him. The bond of angel to man brings the
two into a similar kind of thinking. And since a
person's thought is connected to his memory,
where speech comes from, the two are in
command of the same language.

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772)
Swedish scientist, philosopher and Christian mystic

"Guardian Angel "
Ignaz Gunther

The angels keep their
ancient places; --
Turn but a stone,
and start a wing!
'Tis ye, 'tis your
estranged faces,
That miss the many-
splendour'd thing.

Francis Thompson (1859-1907)
English poet and ascetic, he became
addicted to opium and lived as a street
person until a married couple read his
poetry and had it published.

______________

I believe we are free, within limits, and yet
there is an unseen hand, a guiding angel, that
somehow, like a submerged propeller; drives us on.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)
Bengali poet, artist and composer:
Asia's first Nobel laureate

__________

And the angel said, "Let me go, for the day
breaketh." And Jacob said, "I will not let thee
go, except thou bless me."

Genesis 32: 26

_____________

Make yourself familiar with the angels,
and behold them frequently in spirit;
for, without being seen, they are
present with you.

St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Bishop of Geneva

"Angel Weighing Souls"
Palazzo Carrara, Padua

Lord, give They Angels every day
command to guide us on our way,
And bid them every evening keep
Their watch around us while we sleep.

So shall no wicked thing draw near;
To do us harm or cause us fear;
And we shall swell, when life is past,
With Angels round Thy Throne at last.

Christian Hymn

_____________

He shall give his angels charge over thee to keep
thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in
their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Psalm 91: 11-12

And now the Last Word:

Circle of circles,
angels in flight,
come to me
and bring your light.

Bonus Quote:

Philosophers have argued for centuries about
how many angels can dance on the head of a
pin, but materialists have always known it
depends on whether they are jitterbugging
or dancing cheek to cheek.

American novelist
