Why, who makes much of a miracle?
As to me I know of nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan...
Or look at strangers opposite me riding in the car,
Or watch honey-bees busy around the hive of
a summer afternoon,
Or animals feeding in the fields,
Or birds, or the wonderfulness of insects in the air,
Or the wonderfulness of the sundown, or of stars
shining so quiet and bright,
Or the exquisite delicate thin curve of the new
moon in spring...
To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle,
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle,
Every square yard of the surface of the earth
is spread with the same,
Every foot of the interior swarms with the same...
What stranger miracles are there?
Walt Whitman (1819-1892)
American poet, journalist, humanist
I see God in every human being. When I wash
the leper's wounds, I feel I am nursing the Lord
himself. Is it not a beautiful experience?
Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997)
Albanian nun, Nobel Peace Prize winner
If you are a poet, you will see clearly
that there is cloud floating in this
sheet of paper. Without a cloud, there
will be no rain, the trees cannot grow;
and without trees, we cannot make paper.
The cloud is essential for the paper to
exist. So we can say that the cloud and
the paper inter-are...
If we look into this sheet of paper even
more deeply, we can see the sunshine in
it. If the sunshine is not there, the
forest cannot grow...and if we continue
to look, we can see the logger who cut
the tree and brought it to the mill to
be transformed into paper. And we see
the wheat,...his daily bread. And the
logger's father and mother are in it,
too...We see that without all of these
things, this sheet of paper cannot exist.
Looking even more deeply, we can see we
are in it, too...because when we look at
a sheet of paper, the sheet of paper is
part of our perception...
Without "non-paper elements," like mind,
logger, sunshine and so on, there will be
no paper. As thin as this sheet of paper
is, it contains everything in the
universe in it.
Thich Nhat Hanh (1926- )

The quietude of the forest,
like a grand cathedral,
Every leaf is divinity;
every tree holds
a moment of eternity.

Everything in the universe is energy
or a manifestation of energy, and the
purpose of spiritual work is to become
one with that flow of higher creative
energy coming from God through the cosmos.
Contemporary Hindu spiritual teacher
You must teach your children that the
ground beneath their feet is the ashes
of your grandfathers. So that they will
respect the land, tell your children that
the earth is rich with the lives of our kin.
Teach your children what we have taught
our children, that earth is our mother.
Whatever befalls the earth befalls the
sons of the earth. If men spit upon the
ground, they spit upon themselves.
Chief Seattle (c. 1786 - 1866)
And now the Last Word:
Everything is linked with everything
else; as divine essence is below as
well as above, in heaven and on earth.
There is nothing else.
Moses de Leon (d. 1305)
Spanish Jewish mystic
But give me the strength that waits
upon You in silence and peace.
Thomas Merton (1915-1968)
Trappist monk and author
