My Father, I have moments of deep unrest --
moments when I know not what to ask by reason
of the very excess of my wants. I have in these hours
no words for Thee, no conscious prayers for Thee.
My cry seems purely worldly; I want only the wings
of a dove that I may flee away. Yet all the time Thou
has accepted my unrest as a prayer. Thou has
interpreted its cry for a dove's wings as a cry for Thee,
Thou has received the nameless longings of my heart as
the intercessions of Thy Spirit. They are not yet the
intercessions of my spirit; I know not what to ask.
But thou knowest what I ask, O my God. Thou
knowest the name of that need which lies beneath
my speechless groan. Thou knowest that, because
I am made in Thine image, I can find rest only in
what gives rest to Thee; therefore Thou hast counted
my unrest unto me for righteousness, and has called
my groaning Thy Spirit's prayer. Amen.

Reverend George Matheson (1842-1906)
Scottish theologian and preacher

Pray inwardly, though thee thinketh it savour
thee not : for it is profitable, though thou feel not,
though thou see nought ; yea, though thou think
thou canst not. For in dryness and in barrenness,
in sickness and in feebleness, then is thy prayer
well-pleasant to me, though thee thinketh it
savour thee nought but little. And so is all thy
believing prayer in my sight.

Julian of Norwich (c. 1342- c. 1416)
Female, she is one England's greatest mystics

Emotions, or feelings, as we call them, are the
energies that move us in response to our thoughts
and experiences. All emotions are neutral. They
have no meaning other than the meanings we
assign to them ... What goes on in our lives and
the experiences that we have at any given moment
is rarely the issue. We are responding to meanings
and judgments that create imbalances in our mental
and emotional energy ... Do not deny what you feel.
Just keep in the back of your mind that it will pass ...
Trust yourself enough to know that you can feel
anything and recover from it.

_______________

Hard times aren't the hurdles on
the road to God, they are the road.

-Martin Buber

Difficulties are opportunities in our
journey to God. War, poverty, illness,
the death of loved ones, work problems,
petty misunderstandings, tensions in our
relationships -- all are golden opportunities
for growth because they can open our hearts to
reality ... They allow us to know our true selves
rather than staying stuck in the superficial
through tenacious ego. They dispose us to openness
and surrender to the Divine; they soften and ripen us
until we become receptive to grace and guidance of God.

From "The Mystic Hours,"
by Wayne Teasdale
New World Library, 2004

Let your presence ring out like a bell into the night.
What feeds upon your face grows mighty from the
nourishment thus offered. Move through transformation,
out and in. What is the deepest loss that you have
suffered? If drinking is bitter, change yourself to wine.

In this immeasurable darkness, be the power that rounds
your senses in their magic ring, the sense of their
mysterious encounter.

And if the earthly no longer knows your name,
whisper to the silent earth: I'm flowing.
To the flashing water say: I am.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)
German poet
From "The Sonnets to Orpheus"

And now the Last Word:

If God brings you to it,
He will bring your through it.
Happy moments, praise God.
Difficult moments, seek God.
Quiet moments, worship God.
Painful moments, trust God.
Every moment, thank God.
