"Declaration of Independence" by John Trumbull, 1817

The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see
of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men.
And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without
his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise with-
out His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred
Writings, that except the Lord build the House, they
labor in vain that build it.

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
Founding Father of United States, diplomat, scientist

In its main features the Declaration of Independence
is a spiritual document. It is a declaration not of mater-
ial but spiritual conceptions. Equality, liberty, popular
sovereignty, the rights of man — these are not elements
which we can see and touch. They are ideals. They have
their source and their roots in religious convictions.
They belong to the unseen world. Unless the faith of
the American people in these religious convictions is
to endure,
the principles of our Declaration will perish.
We cannot continue to enjoy the result if we neglect
and abandon the cause. If all men are created equal,
that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable
rights, that is final. If government derive their just
power from the consent of the governed, that is
final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond
these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their
truth and their soundness, the only direction in which
he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward
toward the time when there was no equality, no rights
of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish
to proceed in that direction cannot lay claim to progress.

Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933)
30th President of the United States

It is religion and morality alone which can
establish the principles upon which freedom
can securely stand. The only foundation of a
free constitution is pure virtue, and if this
cannot be inspired into our People in a greater
Measure, than they have it now, they may change
their Rulers and the form of Government,
but they will not obtain a lasting liberty.

John Adams (1735-1826)
1st Vice President of the United States,
2nd President of the United States

America, the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea.

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self control,
Thy liberty in law.

playing with explosive material.

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine.

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.

"America, the Beautiful"
Text: Katherine L. Bates (1859-1929)
Music: Samuel A. Ward ( 1848-1903)

And now, the Last Word:

Were my soul trembling on the wing of
eternity, were this hand freezing to death,
were my voice choking with the last
struggle, I would still, with the last gasp
of that voice, implore you to remember

the truth: God has given America to be free.

Patrick Henry (1736-1799)
Influential advocate of the American Revolution
