They just don't recognize him.

Guard my soul, for I am devout; save your servant who trusts
You, O You, my God. Show me favor, O Lord, for to You do I
call all the day. Gladden the soul of Your servant, for to You,
O Lord, I lift up my soul.

Psalm 86: 2-4

And in this endless Love man's Soul is kept whole, as the matter of the Revelations
signifieth and sheweth: in which endless Love we be led and kept of God and never
shall be lost. For He willeth that we be aware that our Soul is a life, which life of His
Goodness and His Grace shall last in Heaven without end, Him loving, Him thanking,
Him praising. And right the same that we shall be without end, the same we were
treasured in God and hid, known and loved from without beginning.

Julian of Norwich (c. 1342 - c. 1416)
A female, she resided in the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, hence the name given to her.
Little else is known about this remarkable English mystic.
From "Revelations of Divine Love" by Julian of Norwich, first published in 1373
There comes a time in the seeker's life when he discovers that he
is at once the lover and the beloved. The aspiring soul which he
embodies is the lover in him. And the transcendental Self which
he reveals from within is his Beloved.

Sri Chinmoy (1931-       )
Indian philosopher and guru; author, artist, composer

You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.

C.S. Lewis (1898-1963)
Irish author and scholar
...I am not of this world, nor of the next, nor or Paradise, nor of Hell;
I am not of Adam, nor of Eve, nor of Eden or Eden's angels.
My place is the Placeless, my trace is the Traceless;
'Tis neither body nor soul, for I belong to the soul of the Beloved.
I have put duality away, I have seen that the two worlds are one;
One I seek, One I know, One I see, One I call.
He is the first, he is the last, he is the outward, he is the inward;
I know none other except "O he" and "O he who is." (...)

Jalal Al-din Rumi (1207-1273)
Persian poet and Sufi theologian

When the soul clings to the Lord, and the Lord, moved by compassion and love,
comes to the soul and clings to it, and the mind remains constantly in the grace of
the Lord, then the soul and its Lord become one spirit, one nature, and one mind.

Makarios the Egyptian, aka Marcarius the Great, and Lamp of the Desert (300-391)
Egyptian Christian monk and hermit

Trust in me always. I am the
eternal Rock, your Shepherd,
the Guardian of your soul.
When you go through deep
waters and great trouble, I
will be with you. When you
go through rivers of
difficulty, you will not drown!
When you walk through the
fire of oppression, you will
not be burned up, the flames
will not consume you...
