When the soul clings to the Lord, and the
Lord, moved by compassion and love, comes
to the soul and clings to it, and the mind
remains constantly in the grace of the Lord,
then the soul and its Lord become one spirit,
one nature, and one mind...
The soul possesses him as its inheritance in
the heavens, and he, on the other hand,
possesses the soul as his inheritance on earth.
For the Lord becomes the inheritance of the soul,
and the soul becomes the inheritance of the Lord.

Makarios the Egyptian (301-391)
Aka Macarius the Elder and The Lamp of the Desert
Egyptian Christian monk and hermit
Excerpted from "Ecstatic Confessions,"
by Martin Buber

Soul is that aspect of God by virtue of which He is able to
individualize Himself. The word "individual" means "undivided."
...God has the power of individualizing Himself without, so to
speak, breaking Himself into parts...

Matter cannot be individualized. It can only be divided. So your
real self, the Christ within, the spiritual man, the I Am, or the
divine spark, as it is variously called, is an individualization of

Man may very well be compared to an electric light bulb. The
electric current is present in all parts of the circuit, but it shines
forth, or one might say, figuratively, becomes self-conscious, in
the bulb. So divine Mind becomes conscious in you.

Emmet Fox (1886-1951)
Irish spiritual leader who greatly influenced the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous
From "Around the Year with Emmet Fox,"  HarperSanFrancisco, 1992

He who penetrates the great universal harmony keeps
himself withdrawn like one who is drunk from a noble
wine and lies down with benevolent feelings. He moves
in this immeasurable harmony as if he had never left the
ground of the creation of beings. This is called the
great penetration.

This is the action of the holy man. He moves toward the
perfect void. He walks with his heart in the unconditional
No. He strides out of all space. He takes his way where
there is no door. He hears what has no sound. He sees
what has no form. He does not cling to time.

From the Book of Wen-Tse,
disciple of Lao-Tse (4th-6th century B.C.)
Excerpted from "Ecstatic Confessions" (ibid.)

The first duty required of souls is self-discipline; the
second is self-surrender and complete passivity; the
third requires great humility, a humble and willing
disposition and a readiness to follow the movement
of grace which motivates everything if they simply
respond willingly to all its guidance...And this third
duty truly supersedes every law, every formula, and
every established custom. It inspires in souls unique
and remarkable resolutions and governs their vocal
prayers, their inner voice, the perception of their
senses and the radiance of their lives.

Jean-Pierre de Caussade (1675-1751)
French Jesuit priest

And now the Last Word:

There comes a time in the seeker's life when he discovers
that he is at once the lover and the beloved. The
aspiring soul which he embodies is the lover in him.
And the transcendental Self which he reveals from
within is he Beloved.

Sri Chimnoy (1931-    )
Spiritual guide, writer, musician, poet, artist, athlete

Bonus Quote:

Whatever offerings a man may make to gain merit
are not worth a small part of reverence.
