Book of Isaiah, Book of John, Dale Evans, John Greenleaf Whittier, Phillips Brooks

Dear Readers,

A holy birth is an ongoing experience. You don't have to
be Jesus to have one, although of course, to Christians,
His birth was nothing short of God incarnate; the miracle
of Emmanuel, or God with us. He lowered Himself to walk
among us, so that in walking with Him, we are lifted up.

I realized something at midnight mass this year: when
we stop whatever we're doing and physically, mentally
and spiritually seek the face of Light, God rushes toward
us. That's why in giving, we receive, because in giving,
we receive Him; we receive more than we could ever give.
We are born into greater holiness each time we allow Him
to give us the present of His Presence. We don't need a
special date on the calendar to receive Him, so may your
Christmas season last all year long. Holy Christmas.
O come, let us adore Him.

"Nativity" by Giorgione (1507)

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shined.
Thou hast multiplied the nation,
thou hast increased its joy;
they rejoice before thee
as with joy at the harvest,
as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
For the yoke of his burden,
and the staff for his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor,
thou has broken as on the day of Mid'ian.

Isaiah 9:2-4
Revised Standard Version

And the word became flesh and dwelt among us,
full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory,
glory as of the only Son from the Father...And from
his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth
came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God;
the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father,
he has made him known.

John 1:14
Revised Standard Edition

"Bébé, ou Naissance du Christ à la tahitienne" by Paul Gaughin (1896)

Christmas, my child,
is love in action.
Every time we love,
every time we give,
it's Christmas.

Dale Evans (1912-2001)
Writer, author, songwriter;
wife of cowboy Roy Rogers

Somehow, not only for Christmas,
but all the year through,
The joy that you give others,
is the joy that comes back to you;
And the more you spend in blessing the
poor and lonely and sad,
The more of your heart's possessing
returns to make you glad.

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)
American Quaker poet

The Last Word:

O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King
And peace to men on earth.

Phillips Brooks (1835-1893)
"O Little Town of Bethlehem"

Utterly Random Bonus Quote:

It is the mark of an educated mind
to be able to entertain a thought
without accepting it.
