The Betrayal of Christ (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio - 1571-1610)

After arresting him they led him away and took him into
the house of the high priest; Peter was following at a
distance. They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard
and sat around it, and Peter sat down with them. When
a maid saw him seated in the light, she looked intently
at him and said, "This man too was with him." But he
denied it saying, "Woman, I do not know him."
A short while later someone else saw him and said,
You too are one of them," but Peter answered, "My
friend, I am not." About an hour later, still another
insisted, "Assuredly, this man too was with him, for
he also is a Galilean." But Peter said, "My friend, I
do not know what you are talking about." Just as he
was saying this, the cock crowed, and the Lord turned
and looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word
of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the cock
crows today, you will deny me three times." He went
out and began to weep bitterly.

______________

I think that if God forgives us
we must forgive ourselves.

C. S. Lewis (1898-1963)

No - it is not to despair that You bring me
but to humility. For true humility is, in a
way, a very real despair; despair of myself,
in order that I may hope entirely in You.

Thomas Merton (1915-1968)

Flagellation of Christ (Caravaggio)

The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is,
the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort.
The clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of
thorns, placed it on him. They began to salute him with,
"Hail, King of the Jews!" and kept striking his head with
a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in
homage. And when they had mocked him, they stripped
him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes,
and led him out to crucify him.

Detail from Last Judgment (Cimabue)

Believers, look up - take courage.
The angels are nearer than you think.

Billy Graham (1918-  )
__________

My Lord, I have no hope but in Your Cross.
You, by Your humility, and sufferings and death,
have delivered me from all vain hope. You have
killed the vanity of the present life in Yourself,
and have given me all that is eternal in rising
from the dead...

It is necessary that I be human and remain human
in order that the Cross of Christ be not made void.
Jesus died not for the angels but for men.

Thomas Merton (1915-1968)

____________

Whoever reflects earnestly on the meaning of
life is on the verge of an act of faith.

Paul Tillich (1886-1965)

I've read the last page of the Bible.
It's all going to turn out all right.
